Orpheum Theatre – Vancouver
Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre this week played host to Australian favourites the John Butler Trio.
John Butler started his musical career as a busker on the streets of Fremantle, forming The John Butler Trio along with Gavin Shoesmith on double bass and bass guitar and Grant Smith on drums in 1998. After a few years touring Western Australia (where Butler met his wife, Daniella Caruana – lead singer in Mama Kin Spender), they gradually built a solid fanbase across the rest of the country, with a big break coming at the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival in Byron Bay in 2000.
Since that time the band of gone from strength to strength, gaining numerous accolades in their home country, whilst building a solid reputation overseas.
Over the years there have been a number of personnel changes, and the band now consists of Byron Luiters on bass and Grant Gerathy on drums, alongside Butler.
Opening for the trio tonight was Mama Kin Spender, comprising John Butlers wife, Daniella Caruana (aka Mama Kin), and singer songwriter Tommy Spender. The duo recently released their debut album Golden Magnetic. Their casual stage presence, and melodic songs, as well as banter with audience provided a good warm up for the main act. Mama Kin has fond memories of Vancouver as it was almost ten years ago that she made her musical debut at the Commodore Ballroom.
