Mavis Staples

Orpheum Theatre

Mavis Staples is a tour de force. Her show at the Orpheum Theatre on Monday night sometimes resembled a revival meeting, with Staples rousing her converts to ever more vigorous cheering and applause.

Staples held the audience in her hands right from the start, and didn’t let them go until she had actually shaken the hands of a good number of them

Nothing But Thieves

Vogue Theatre

Nothing But Thieves made a triumphant return to Vancouver on Friday now, playing to a large and enthusiastic crowd, who were ready to see the band return to the city for the third time in as many years.

Vocalist Conor Mason recalled playing in front of around 300 people in their last visit to the venue a couple of years ago. Off the back of that visit the band packed out the smaller Imperial on their last visit to the city. This time around the Vogue was packed and ready to party with the boys from Southend.

Traditional instruments, a crowd of Norsemen and women, and mystical music based on the runes can only mean one thing – Wardruna are in town.

Founded by Einar Kvitrafn Selvik in 2003, Wardruna is a Norwegian music group that produce traditional music based on Norse traditions.

With three albums under their belt they have managed to carve out an international fanbase thanks in part to the show Vikings.  Their music featured heavily in the show, and helped their third album, Runaljod Ragnarok, reach top spot in the Billboard World Albums chart after its release in 2016.

We do not get a lot of artists from the Faroe Islands coming through Vancouver, so having one pass through with the level of talent that Eivør possesses was a rare treat..

Since releasing her debut album at the age of 16, Eivør has continued to innovate and push musical boundaries. That first outing, the self-titled, Eivør Pálsdóttir comprised a collection of classic Faroese ballads. Since then she has recorded jazz, orchestral, and rock albums in both her native Faroese and English and has received critical acclaim not only in the Faroe Islands, but across Scandinavia.

The Proclaimers

The Vogue

There was a decidedly Celtic feel at the Vogue Theatre on Sunday night, and the influx of kilts, Scottish flags, and football jerseys could only mean one thing – The Proclaimers were back in town.

Even the weather helped set the scene, with a day of rain heading into a gloomy evening. Just type of evening to stay inside and listen to some (generally) upbeat sounds, from two of Scotland’s finest.

Village People

pne Amphitheatre

With original front man, Victor Willis, back at the helm, the good ship Village People sailed into Vancouver for a full-on performance at the PNE on Saturday.

The band, which rose to fame in the 70’s with hits such as YMCA, and In the Navy showed that they can still entertain and get the crowds on their feet.

Marianas Trench

pne Amphitheatre

Marianas Trench closed out their summer schedule in style in front of an adoring and enthusiastic home town crowd at the PNE in Vancouver on Saturday night.

The rock gods must have been smiling, as a day of miserable weather miraculously cleared up ahead of the show, although I don’t think anything would have damped the enthusiasm for this local four-piece.
