The weather gods in Vancouver must have known that Ziggy Marley was in town, and provided some Jamaican heat to make him feel welcome.  It was not only the weather gods that turned out on a Monday night to see the reggae superstar.  The Vogue Theatre played host to an enthusiastic crowd that was ready to dance almost as soon as the band hit the stage, and didn’t stop until the lights came up.

Marley was in town courtesy of Coastal Jazz as one of the headline acts of this years TD International Jazz Festival. It might seem like an unusual choice for a jazz festival, but the Coastal Jazz team played to this seeming contradiction in the introductions, and I think the nature of jazz itself leads it to be different, and not always follow the norms.. The 2017 Vancouver International Jazz Festival gets underway later this week, bring more than 1800 artists to the city for this annual music extravaganza.  As in past years, in addition to the headlining shows there will be around 150 free concerts in locations across the city, which means great music is within reach of everyone.

The festival runs from June 22 until July 2, and will be bringing a huge breadth of talent and musical styles to Vancouver.

Ziggy Marley will be at the Vogue Theatre – June 26th

Headliners this year include Seu Jorge, Thievery Corporation, Donny McCaslin Group and Ziggy Marley.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the Downtown Jazz Weekend, June24/25.  This event is located in the newly renovated locations in the grounds of the Vancouver Art Gallery and Robson Square. The redesign of the north Georgia Plaza will provide improved sightlines, and deliver a more comfortable listening experience for everyone.  In addition to the music here, the “music and arts village” will also be available, as well as a licensed bar.  There will be three stages at this location to enjoy the music, – Georgia Stage, Robson Stage and the Sounds of Youth Stage.  All the activities at these locations are free, come on down.

With an successful career spanning more than 30 years, a string of top rated albums and a cabinet full of Grammy Awards, David Nesta “Ziggy” Marley will be one of the highlights of this year’s TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

Son of reggae legend Bob Marley, and Rita Marley, Ziggy was surrounded by music from a very early age. Ziggy and siblings formed the successful Ziggy Marley and Melody Makers in 1979, with Ziggy performing on stage at the tender age of 11.

The band has released 13 albums between 1985 and 2000, with a critical and commercial breakthrough with Conscious Party, which delivered the first of 8 Grammy Awards so far.

Since 2003 Ziggy has released 6 solo studio albums and three live albums, which between them have spawned 5 more Grammys, with 2016 self titles being the latest.

As well as being success on stage, Ziggy has always been philanthropic off the stage as well.  This started early in his life with royalties from Children Playing in the Streets pledged to the UN.  Ziggy has continued to give, founding of the URGE Foundation, which supports education, health and the environment, for children in communities in Africa and Jamaica.
